Marconi Archive Catalogue now available online

A detailed catalogue of the Marconi Archive in the Bodleian Library, Oxford is now available online. The catalogue of the Marconi Archive was launched on 7 November 2008 and provides a comprehensive guide to its contents, with links to the existing MarconiCalling website featuring images of many of the significant documents described in the catalogue. Besides documents relating to Guglielmo Marconi and his Wireless Telegraph Company, there are records of numerous other electronic and electrical engineering companies, all of which were ultimately absorbed into the General Electric Company (GEC) which in 1999 changed its own name to Marconi.

An Invitation from the PARA President

Dear Fellow Hams,

GREETINGS!

This year, we will be celebrating the 76th Anniversary of the Philippine Amateur Radio Association Inc., at the Boy Scouts of the Philippines covered court at No.181 Natividad Almeda-Lopez, Ermita, Manila across SM Manila on November 22, 2008.

It is for this occasion that I am inviting everyone to join us in the celebration of the said event which has been a tradition to renew our friendships and meet new amateur members from all over the country.  A minimal fee of P50/person will be collected, and this will be used to defray expenses covering tables, chairs, sounds and other miscellaneous items.

We look forward to seeing you on this occasion and we thank you also for your continued support of the Philippine Amateur Radio Association.

May we also invite you to participate in the flea market/swap meet by bringing your ham radio gear/accessories that might be of interest to other hams.

Further updates will be posted on this web page.

73 and hope to see you at this big event.

JIMMY/DU2JAK
PARA President

IARU ENDORSED BOOKLET PROMOTING ETHICS.

A 67-page booklet, 'Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur' by John Devoldere, ON4UN, and Mark Demeuleneere, ON4WW, is available for free download from the ARRL Web site.  The booklet mainly addresses HF operating issues, but the principles are also applicable to VHF and higher bands.

At its June 2008 meeting, the IARU Administrative Council endorsed and recommended the principles set out in the booklet as a means of encouraging all radio amateurs 'to operate to the highest levels of proficiency, with proper consideration for others using the amateur radio bands' and as a tool 'to teach newcomers and others correct operating behavior.'

The authors are well known, experienced HF operators who are concerned about on-the-air operating standards and who decided that 'It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness.' Anyone who reads their booklet will learn something, no matter how experienced they may be.

ARRL DXCC Rule # 5 dropped...

5. The presentation in any public forum of logs or other representations of station operation showing details of station activity or other information from which all essential QSO elements (time, date, band, mode and callsign) for individual contacts can be derived creates a question as to the integrity of the claimed QSOs with that station during the period encompassed by the log. Presentation of such information in any public forum by the station operator, operators or associated parties is not allowed and may be considered sufficient reason to deny ARRL award credit for contacts with any station for which such presentations have been made. Persistent violation of this provision may result in disqualification from the DXCC program.

ARRL now say..."This rule cannot be enforced. In its place staff will create resources and guidelines for QSLing and for QSL managers in order to maintain the integrity of operating awards programs."

Solar Cycle 24 - where is it???

This chart shows the sunspot values to September 30 and the predictions for the next 7 years. As you can see the upturn is imminent, but don't hold your breath! During October 2008 we have had four Cycle 24 spots which is remarkable in a year with almost no sunspots at all, and by the end of this year we should have conditions which are a little better than they were at the beginning of the year, which is something. If this happens then we can expect a rapid upturn during 2009 with a peak around the middle of 2011 or slightly later.  For more info on Solar Cycle #24, please click on the graph above.

The following message is from Ramon Anquilan, DU1UGZ, Secretary General of PARA. This was also printed in the souvenir ads program  available at the Convention.

M E S S A G E

It is said that everything changes except change itself.  PARA is no exception. History will judge us if the changes which took place in our times are effective and responsive to the need for growth and development of the amateur radio service in the country.  Just the same, those who will later on take our places will feel the consequences of what we are doing and have done in this generation.

In this 76th Convention, milestones will be introduced. An overhauled By Laws, a new district structure, and even the manner and composition of the Board of Directors.  Some innovations are already in place such as the new edition of So You Want To Be A Ham handbook, professional Orientation Seminar modules, and accurate Question Pool for Entry Level Examinations.

The Secretariat is also undergoing changes.  Efforts are being made to make PARA compliant with business and government regulations such as securing a BIR TIN, Business Permit – Office Only, and audit compliant books of accounts.  This is being done to prepare PARA to live up to the standards and practices as a Non-Government Organization that will be given a Donee Status by the BIR.  The BIR Certification will allow PARA to receive donations and issue, in return, the required certificates that may be used for income tax purposes.

This 76th Convention is even a monumental change by itself.  In the Board Meeting of the 75th Convention in Naga, it was decided to bring back the annual celebrations to summer time.  The 74th and 75th annual celebrations were affected by inclement weather, thus the Board decision to revert the celebrations to either April or May of each year.

PARA is not just an umbrella association.  It is the only umbrella association for amateur radio recognized by the National Telecommunications Commission.  Its growth and development affords us opportunities to also grow and develop in our chosen hobby.  Let us get involved.  Let us be one with PARA.

RAMON J. ANQUILAN, DU1UGZ

                                                                                              Secretary General

Propagation bad? Is your antenna down or your rig broken? No problem, there are lots of ways to listen on the bands without having a radio - you just need an internet connection.

Rod Dinkins, AC6V, SK

Rod Dinkins, AC6V, of Oceanside, California, passed away Saturday, February 16. An ARRL member, he was 77. Many hams considered Dinkins, the author and developer of the Web site www.ac6v.com, to be the final word on anything to do with ham radio. His Web site has more than 130 pages covering thousands of Amateur Radio-related topics, everything from amps (A) to impedance (Z); some hams have said that if a topic is not found on or linked to Dinkins' Web site, it's safe to say that topic does not exist in the Amateur Radio world.

DU HAMS IN DXCC HONOR

The latest ARRL Honor Listing (10th July 2008) includes several prominent DU Hams. Highest among DU hams is Robin Go, DU9RG with 345 confirmed entities in the mixed category. Another DU ham who made to the Honor Roll is Roger Flores, DU1KT, with 341 entities confirmed.

Included in the list is another ham sporting a portable DU call. Clarence Green, WB5LBJ/DU, is an Extra Class operator based in DU6. He is listed with 341 confirmed entities in the DXCC Honor Roll Mixed Category.

DXCC stands for the DX Century Club Award given by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). DXCC entities are not political territories but are defined in the DXCC rules. So there can be more than one entity in a country.  In the Philippines, the Spratly Group is a separate DXCC entity designated as 1S. The latest DXpedition to Spratly was conducted by DXØJP.  Another entity in the Philippines is the disputed Scarborough Reef designated as BS7.  There was a DXpedition to the reef recently with the special call DXØS granted by NTC to the Philippine Amateur Radio Association (PARA), Inc.

As of 10th July 2008 , there are a total of 338 current DXCC. 329 confirmations are required for entry to the DXCC Honor Roll.
